JLNS Heads to Sacramento with "There Ought To Be A Law" Ideas

23 November 2009
Last Wednesday, Junior League of Napa-Sonoma held a Community Forum where leaders were engaged in sharing community needs and trends that are challenging our children and families. The Forum was part of the League’s “There Ought To Be A Law” outreach, which is spearheaded by JLNS’ State Public Affairs Committee.

The State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC) is comprised of 16 California Junior Leagues, representing over 11,000 women and almost $1,000,000 in community funding. SPAC engages in project-driven advocacy and often sponsors bills that focus on Education, Family Support, Health or Violence Prevention. League members serving as SPAC delegates are not paid lobbyists, but rather non-partisan, trained volunteers in the legislative process, from securing a bill’s author to testifying before our legislators.

Honored guests included Honorable Arnold Rosenfield, Sonoma County Superior Court Judge, Nick Honey, Division Director of Sonoma County’s Family, Youth and Children’s Services, Gary Lieberstein, Napa County District Attorney, Diana Gomez, Sonoma County Assistant District Attorney and Eunice Valentine, Executive Director of the Volunteer Center of Sonoma County (see photo).

Ideas sparked after input from our distinguished panel and included possible legislation surrounding elder care, media literacy and mandatory community service. SPAC will continue to investigate these issues and prepare to take comprehensive legislative answers to Sacramento in early 2010.

“The members of the Junior League of Napa-Sonoma were very interested to learn first hand about the state of affairs in our community.” said Paula Pang, JLNS President. “Not only will the information help us to craft legislation, but also to develop programs and services that meet the needs of the people around us.”

SPAC welcomes additional “There Ought To Be A Law” submissions from the community. Information forms can be found at www.jlns.org under In Action – SPAC.
